When people are lost, they look to the north star (also known as polaris). When giving directions to Neverland, Peter Pan says “second star to the right and straight on ‘till morning.” So travel with us on a Journey to Polaris as we transform the San Diego Inspiration Hornblower into a world of stars, fantasy, and a hint of magic.

District Fundraising Initiative: American Foundation for Suicide Prevention
This year Masquerade Ball will be donating profits to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). AFSP is a voluntary health organization dedicated to preventing suicide by raising awareness, funding in scientific research, advocating for public policies and educating the public about mental health and suicide prevention, in addition to supporting survivors of suicide loss and those affected by suicide. Established in 1987, the organization is now headquartered in New York, with local chapters in all 50 states. Since it’s founding, AFSP has reached out to thousands of individuals who were and are at risk for suicide. It has attracted members from the scientific and clinical communities to conduct groundbreaking research and has educated hundreds of local communities about suicide and how to prevent it. Moreover, AFSP has successfully merged with an existing national policy organization to press for legislation and policies at the federal, state, and local levels to advance the goal of preventing suicide. District Service Initiative: Personal Health
For the 2017-2018 term, CNH Circle K’s DSI is Be the Change: Personal Health. The fast-paced nature of the world we live in can easily lead us to compromise various aspects of our personal health in order to balance all of the demands placed on us by things like school, work, extracurriculars, and maintaining our personal relationships with other people. Sometimes, we get so caught up taking care of everything and everyone else in our lives that we forget to take care of the one person that needs our help the most, ourself. Our overall personal health is a combination of several factors, such as our physical, mental, and emotional well-being, and in order to achieve the best versions of ourselves, we must continue to practice behaviors that will improve the quality of our lives for the long term. By encouraging and inspiring our members to take better care of themselves, we are equipping them with the tools to teach other members of our communities to do the same. Through this year’s District Service Initiative, our members will become forces of positive change in their communities and show the general public how they, too, can practice healthier behaviors in order to achieve optimal physical, mental, and emotional well-being over the course of their entire lives. We, as a District, have the power to change the world, but we can only do that so long as we remember to take care of ourselves, too.
